Stress Awareness Day in the Office: 10 Ideas London Employers Can Use This November

Stress Awareness Day falls on the first Wednesday of November each year, which in 2026 is Wednesday 4 November. It is a good moment to pause and ask a simple question: how is your team actually doing?

The numbers say many people are not doing well. According to the Health and Safety Executive, 964,000 workers in Great Britain reported stress, depression or anxiety caused or made worse by work in 2024/25, and these conditions accounted for an estimated 22.1 million lost working days (HSE). Mental Health UK’s Burnout Report 2026 found that one in five workers took time off because of poor mental health caused by stress (Mental Health UK).

A single day will not fix that. It can, though, start a conversation and show staff that wellbeing is more than a poster in the kitchen. Here are ten ideas that work in a London office, whatever your budget.

1. Bring in on-site chair massage

Fully-clothed chair massage is one of the easiest wellbeing activities to run. Sessions last 10 to 20 minutes, need no changing room or oils, and fit into a meeting room or quiet corner. Staff book a slot, step away from their screens and come back feeling looser and calmer.

Many people carry tension in their neck, shoulders and upper back from long days at a desk. A short massage gives them a proper break, and it is something they will talk about for the rest of the week.

2. Hold a meeting-free afternoon

Ask leaders to cancel internal meetings after 2pm. People use the time to catch up, think, or simply breathe. It costs nothing and sends a clear message.

3. Share a “where to get help” list

Put together one page with your Employee Assistance Programme number, your mental health first aiders, and outside support such as Mind and Samaritans (call 116 123, free, any time). Send it round and pin it somewhere visible.

4. Run a manager check-in session

Mental Health UK found that 35% of workers would not feel comfortable telling their manager they were under high or extreme stress. A short briefing for managers on how to start a supportive conversation can make a real difference.

5. Encourage a lunchtime walk

London is full of green space, from Postman’s Park in the City to the riverside paths at Canary Wharf. Organise a 20-minute group walk, or just encourage people to leave their desks.

6. Ask for honest feedback

Run a quick anonymous survey: what causes the most stress at work, and what one change would help? Then share what you heard and what you plan to do about it.

7. Create a quiet room for the day

Book a meeting room as a phone-free, chat-free space. Add soft lighting, water and a few comfortable chairs.

8. Swap the biscuits for something better

Fruit, water and herbal tea will not change the world, but a thoughtful snack table shows you have given it some thought.

9. Look at workload, not just wellbeing perks

Mental Health UK reports that 42% of workers blamed high or increased workload for their stress. Perks help people recover, but leaders should also look at deadlines, staffing and unpaid overtime.

10. Make it more than one day

The most useful thing you can do on Stress Awareness Day is plan what happens next. A monthly massage day, regular check-ins or a wellbeing calendar keeps the momentum going.
