The Power of Workplace Chair Massage: Why 15 Minutes Makes a Difference

Most wellbeing perks are things people have to remember to use: an app, a helpline, a gym discount. Chair massage is different. Someone turns up, sets up a chair in a quiet room, and your team gets a proper break without leaving the building. It’s one of the few perks people actually feel straight away.

Here’s what a short session really does, and why so many London offices now book it regularly.

Why our bodies need it

Long days at a desk take their toll. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), an estimated 511,000 workers in Great Britain were affected by work-related musculoskeletal disorders in 2024/25, with 7.1 million working days lost. Neck, shoulder and upper back tension are some of the most common complaints we hear on the day.

A seated massage focuses on exactly those areas. People stay fully clothed, there are no oils, and they lean forward into a specially designed chair while the therapist works on the neck, shoulders, back, arms and hands.

Why our minds need it too

Stress is now the biggest single cause of work-related ill health. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimates 964,000 workers had work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2024/25, and research from the CIPD and Simplyhealth found that 64% of organisations had stress-related absence in the past year.

Fifteen minutes away from the screen, with your phone in your pocket and someone looking after you, is rare in most working days. People often tell us it’s the first time all week they’ve actually switched off.

There’s research behind it as well. A small study by the Touch Research Institute (Field and colleagues, 1996) gave office workers 15-minute chair massages twice a week. They reported feeling less anxious and were faster and more accurate at maths tasks afterwards than a group who simply relaxed.

The benefits teams notice most

  • Less tension in the neck, shoulders and back after long desk days.
  • A clearer head. People go back to their desks calmer and more focused.
  • Feeling valued. It’s a visible thank-you that everyone can take part in.
  • Something to talk about. A massage day gives teams a shared, positive moment, which is great for morale in hybrid teams.
  • No disruption. Sessions fit between meetings, so work carries on as normal.

How to get the most out of it

  • Make it regular. A monthly or quarterly visit means people look forward to it and feel the benefit over time.
  • Tie it to the moments that matter, like Stress Awareness Day, busy deadlines or Christmas. Our Wellbeing Awareness Calendar has the key dates.
  • Let people book their own slot. We provide an online booking system you can share with your team, so everyone picks a time that suits them.
  • Pair it with the bigger picture. Massage works best alongside good workloads, supportive managers and clear signposting to support.

Is it right for your workplace?

If your team spends long hours at screens, is going through a busy period, or simply deserves a thank-you, the answer is usually yes. All you need is a space of about 3m x 3m and a date. You can read more in our guide, What Is Corporate Chair Massage?
